IDEA

“if this technology goes wrong,
it can go quite wrong.”

On May 16th 2023, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, stood before the U.S. Congress, advocating for AI regulation.

Unregulated AI poses significant risks. To address this, OpenAI takes a bold step — CloseAI, closing products for 24 hours, spotlighting the potential perils of AI. In collaboration with Unesco, they also call for action, asking people to sign the petition that urges enacting a proper AI regulation.

The case film highlights various societal issues stemming from the misuse of AI. These issues include spreading fake news, injecting biases and false information, privacy concerns, copyright infringements, fraud crimes like spam and phishing, and even sexual offenses. All of these examples underscore the urgency and importance of regulation.

Installation

"Fake News Gallery" is a newsroom-style installation that brings together a collection of fake news stories generated without ethical regulation, expanding on the themes of the CloseAI: Please Regulate Us campaign. Visitors are initially exposed to the headlines and images without knowing whether they are real or fake. Gradually, they come to realize that every piece has been created using AI tools. The exhibit raises awareness of how unregulated AI technologies can spread misinformation across various sectors of society, potentially fueling conflict, confusion, and widespread social harm.
